So, I'm obsessed with these coasters :) One of my very first DIY Pinterest projects, and all for under $2.00 for a set of four!
Follow these simple steps to make some personalized coasters for your own home, or as a gift!
Begin with small ceramic tiles (I found mine at Home Depot for $0.16 each!)
Wash under warm water and lay out to dry completely. You'd be surprised how much ceramic actually soaks up water, so be sure to let them dry for roughly 45 minutes.
(You can find any generic acrylic paint at a local craft store for less than $2.00 a bottle)
...about 1/2 inch in from the boarder on the top of your tile...
...dont forget to the bottom of the tile the same as the top
Allow 10-15 minutes for paint to dry
I've noticed 2 coats seems to work best. I set the tile on a small votive to dry.
Brush on an extremely thin layer of standard mod podge to the top of the tile
Cut a piece of craft paper (scrapbook card stock, photo, fabric etc) into a 4x4 inch piece. You'll need four of these cuts. Carefully place the paper on top the wet mod podge. Once you have it straight, use your finger to firmly press the borders down. Remove any air bubbles. Cover the paper and the sides of the tile in another coat of podge.
I let it sit on the votive to dry for another 15 minutes, and repeat. 2-3 coats should do it.
Measure any embellishments you'd like to add. Create a design, make it your own :)
...this part is completely optional
Cover with one last coat of podge.
DO NOT exceed 3 thin coats. It starts to get "gooey"
Sorry I do not have a photo: Once podge is completely dry, spray one layer of "Extra thick clear glaze." (Found in the spray paint section of the craft store, under $5) And do this outdoors, it gets pretty chemically stinky.
Once dry, cut 4x4 inch piece of felt ($0.33 at craft store) and hot glue to the back of the tile. I cut mine just a hair under 4x4, so the felt doesn't stick out the sides
And TAH DAH! You have a sweet new set of personalized coasters! I use these ones for Valentines day.
